I will probably have to wikipedia the word "mummer".
Pause....I looked it up...it has something to do with old english folk plays usually performed in the streets...but you should look it up for yourself.

ReplyDeletea mummer is typically a little drunk, a bra on one's head or some such thing to disguise the person, playing music freely, travelling about the neighbourhood happily bringing joy to everyone they encounter.
now, those philly mummers are a whole other ball of wax.
"The mummer has often the clearest of voice" could mean that those who are entertaining are often the most heeded.
ReplyDeleteMummer could indicate wearing a mask, being silent and using pantomime, and/or making your point in an amusing way.
There are numerous possible interpretations.
